A world first: ASSA ABLOY security door closer with integrated escape route locking system
The ASSA ABLOY security door closer is the world’s first door closer with an integrated escape door locking system. The slide arm door closer has an escape door strike and a latch bolt lock and offers the opportunity to retrofit escape route locking systems to fire doors. ASSA ABLOY Sicherheitstechnik GmbH is therefore currently launching a completely new and innovative product type.
With the security door closer, ASSA ABLOY is providing a solution that fulfils the latest requirements – including those established by the latest communication from the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (German Institute of Building Technology - DIBT) ‘Permissible changes and upgrades to fire protection barriers and fire protection barriers with smoke protection properties in the modified approval procedure’. According to this communication, it is not necessary to be able to retrofit escape route locking systems to fire protection doors: for systems that have been approved since January 2010, the option of retrofitting holding magnets or escape door strikes must already be specified in document A of the door approval. Suitable attachment points must also be provided, which makes retrofitting far more difficult.
“In view of these new requirements, the market urgently needs a solution that can be retrofitted to fire protection doors”, explained Gerhard Gutmann, Product Manager at ASSA ABLOY. Building operators often need to retrofit fire protection doors with an escape route locking system. Gutmann promises: “We offer an elegant solution in the form of the security door closer.” Without drilling, milling, filing or grinding, ASSA ABLOY makes use of the existing boreholes for door closers in accordance with DIN EN 1154 and positions an extended mounting plate on these. The slide arm is also extended to attach the escape door strike model 332. The latch bolt lock is mounted to the extended mounting plate – not to the door leaf.
The security door closer fulfils the requirements for the ability to retrofit a door closer in accordance with DIN EN 1154. DIN EN 1154, supplementary sheet 1 regulates the fixing dimensions of door closers with specified hole patterns. The boreholes are simply used for the retrofit product. By using adapter plates, ASSA ABLOY can also make use of the existing fastening holes in slide arms from other manufacturers.
